Patterned eagle in flight
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A front-facing eagle with outstretched wings and a detailed head is drawn in black ink on a white background. Each feather is filled with dense geometric hatching, dots, chevrons and scale-like patterns, while the head uses fine stippling. The image is monochrome and centred, with the wingtips and tail spreading to the edges of the frame.

The last tent was pegged on a car park outside Shrewsbury, and Mireille had been counting feathers since breakfast. Eleven hundred on the great wings if you counted each chevron separately, and she always did. Caractacus stood on the perch-block with his head tucked low, unimpressed by the drizzle and the generator's cough.

Tomas, the ringmaster, had sold the lions in March and the elephant's keeper in May. What remained was a trapeze act with two empty rigging points, a clown who did his own accounts on the back of a programme, and the bird. Nobody had flown him in over a year. Mireille kept him fed on mackerel bought from a fishmonger in Crewe who asked no questions and gave her the heads for nothing.
On the final night the lights failed halfway through the wing display. In the dark she unclipped the jess and let the eagle go, expecting him to wheel off over the caravans and the wet tarmac. Instead he dropped onto her shoulder, heavy as a coal sack, and she felt his talons through the leather of her sleeve. Somebody found a torch. The beam caught every inked line on him at once, the dots and hatching and little stepped scales, as if he had been stitched together for this single moment.
Tomas found her at dawn on the empty bleachers, the eagle still on her arm. "He won't go," he said. "Then neither of us is leaving," Mireille said, and tossed the last mackerel head into the grass, where the gulls were already arguing over it.
