Four black eagle designs in flight
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows four separate black eagle designs arranged on a white background, each with wings spread in flight. The birds are drawn as solid silhouettes with stylised feathers, some with fanned tail feathers and others with straight, banded wing lines. The designs use only black ink with no shading or colour.

The lift had been out since Tuesday, so Mrs Okafor's shopping came up the stairwell in my arms and hers, and by the time we reached the seventeenth floor I had stopped feeling my fingers. She didn't stop for breath. She pointed at the roof hatch with her chin and said the bird had been there all morning, not moving, which was the worrying part.

I went up with her bread and a bag of oranges and found it on the parapet by the water tank, wings half open, the feathers cut so straight they looked ruled on. Black as a boot polish tin. It had the banded wing lines of a thing on a council crest, five stripes a side, and its head was turned towards the east stack where the lights were still on in forty flats. Dev from the caretaker's office said it was a crow with ideas. I said crows don't sit that still.
We counted the windows together without meaning to. Seventeen floors, four stacks, one eagle keeping watch over a car park full of bins. Mrs Okafor said her husband used to claim the estate was built on a hill of old bones, and the birds knew which stones to sit on. She laughed when she said it, then touched the hatch door as if it might be warm.
At dusk it opened its wings all the way and dropped off the edge without a sound, and its shadow crossed the car park, over the bins and the bus shelter and the lit window where the lift engineer had left his ladder. Next morning a single feather was still on the gravel. I put it in my coat pocket, and when I reached the bus stop and went to show someone, the pocket was empty, or I had been looking at the thing for too long.
