Her blanket had been woven in the lowland town of Sarun by her aunt, patterned with diamonds and little hooked leaves, and it was the one thing on the road the weather could not spoil.

On the third day the snow came sideways off the ridge and the young carter, Tenzin, lost the line of cairns. The mules bunched and shivered. Mahi stopped at the edge of a drop where a single blue flower grew out of a crack in the rock, the only colour for a mile in any direction. She reached up with her trunk, took the flower gently, and lifted it high, the way a mother lifts a lamp in a dark doorway.

Tenzin looked up and saw the flower held against the grey sky, and he followed it. Step by step he went, with the mules behind him and the elephant behind them, until the wind dropped and the ground turned to grass under his boots. Below them the lamps of a village were coming on, one at a time.

The headman asked at the gate what the elephant had carried over the pass that was so precious she would not let it fall. Tenzin thought about the ledges and the snow. Mahi was already at the water trough, her trunk dipping, and the flower was nowhere he could see. "Only a little light," he said, and the headman nodded as if that was the answer he had expected.
