Every reunion in Hebble Cross began the same way, with the old classmates standing about the village hall pretending they had forgotten the grudges. This year Ruth Pennock arrived last, carrying a painted wooden elephant under one arm because nobody else had thought to bring the leaving gift.

The elephant had been the class mascot in 1979, saddled in cloth stitched with red and gold thread, and it had stood on the windowsill through every maths lesson until Mr Garside locked it in the cupboard for the drawings on the desks. Ruth set it on the trestle table beside the squash urn. For a while nobody spoke. Then Dev Ashworth laughed and said the thing had got fatter, and the room loosened like a knot being picked.

The old people in the valley used to say that an elephant which held a flower up high would bring home whoever had gone missing. Ruth had never believed it. She took a sprig of jasmine from her coat pocket, dried and brittle from her mother's garden, and tucked it into the raised trunk the way the children once tucked lost gloves onto the coat pegs.

Mr Garside, nearly ninety now and sitting by the radiator, reached out and touched the trunk with one finger. You always were the one who found things, he said. The flower stayed where it was, and by the end of the night everyone had gone home a little later than they meant to.
