Patterned hang loose hand design
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a hand with the thumb and little finger extended, in the hang loose or shaka gesture. Each finger and the palm are filled with dense, repeating patterns of spirals, triangles, dots, scallops and mandala-like motifs. The work is black linework on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

The calm had held for nine days, flat as poured lead, and Ines had run out of things to count. The fresh water was rationed, the tins were stacked by label, and the logbook already had more ink in its margins than in its entries. She sat on an upturned crate outside the galley with a biro and the back of a spare manifest, filling each box with a spiral, then a dot, then a row of scallops that curled like waves she could no longer see.

Tomas came up from the engine room with grease to his elbows and stopped to look over her shoulder. He said the pattern looked like the inside of a shell. She said it was the only thing on the ship that kept moving. He laughed, then folded his thumb and little finger out and held his hand up to the grey sky, the old sign from his grandmother's harbour in Madeira. Hang loose, she read it as, and she did not know whether he meant the weather, the dead calm, or himself.
On the tenth morning a breeze came from the west, small enough to miss, and by noon the sails were filling. Ines kept drawing. She drew a hand on the corner of the manifest, its fingers packed with triangles and the thumb ringed in tight circles, the way Tomas had held his up. When the captain asked for the paperwork at the dock in Recife, he found the page tucked under a tin of peaches, turned it over, read nothing, and smiled.
