Ornate lotus flower design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a symmetrical lotus flower built from layered pointed petals filled with fine patterned linework. Small dots and stippled shading add texture around the base, and strings of beads and diamond-shaped drops hang below the flower. The image uses only black ink and grey tones on a plain white background.

The pond had been dry for three summers when Nell Abara climbed the service ladder to the roof of the seed hall, a string of brass beads looped over one wrist and a tin of pale grey silt tied at her belt. Below her the old city of Sarn lay under its cracked dome, and the pumps had stopped on the day the river went underground.

Her grandmother had kept the lotus in the cistern. Every morning the old woman counted the petals as they opened, one for each neighbour taken by the drought, and hung a bead on the chain for each one. The chain grew so heavy that the lowest diamond drops scraped the flagstones. 'A flower carries what you hang on it,' the grandmother used to say, 'and not a petal more.'
Nell knelt at the cistern and spread the silt in a thin ring. She did not pray. She took the beads off her wrist one at a time and said a name over each, the names of the people who had walked out through the north gate with their water bottles and never sent word. When the last bead was in her hand she pressed it into the mud among the stippled dots of wet grit, and sat back on her heels to wait.
By dawn a green point had broken the surface. The keepers came up the ladder and found the chain unhooked from the dome and laid out in a wide ring on the mud, each bead sunk to its rim, and inside the ring the petals were opening one by one, grey at the edges and pale green at the heart.
