A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hush now, and mind the fire, for I will not tell this twice the same way. Down at the ford of Thessely, where the kingdom of Corrand kept its salt barges, there lived a grey-pawed hound called Nala, and she belonged to no one but the bridge.

The old king's steward, a man with a ledger where his heart should be, wanted the bridge toll doubled. Every spring the river rose, and every spring Nala stood in the shallows at dusk and barked the flood warning so the bargemen could tie off in time. The steward called her a nuisance. He had her chain fastened to a post in the tallow house and told the toll-keepers she had been sold south to the salt mines.

Nala did not stay chained. She went through the reeds with her nose low and her paws quiet, and on the night the water came over the causeway, she found the steward's own barge loose and drifting toward the weir. She dragged its rope in her teeth until the bargemen came running with lanterns, and by morning the steward stood on the bank in his nightshirt, counting nothing at all.

They say a star came out over the ford that night, small and sharp, and it sat above the river like a mark on a page. The bargemen took it as a sign and never let the toll rise again. Ask any boatman of Corrand where the good luck of the ford began, and he will point to the water and say, the dog, and then he will pay his penny and go.

That's the tale. Now bank that fire and go to your beds.
