Small abstract curved symbol on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, single tattoo of an abstract symbol built from bold, tapering curved strokes, resembling a stylised swirl or calligraphic mark. It is rendered in solid black ink with no shading, and the lines vary in thickness as they curve. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a plain background, with the wrist visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The lock at Hempstead Mill has been stuck since Tuesday, so we are tied up below it with nothing to do but watch the water come and go. Dad would have had the gate open in ten minutes with a windlass and a joke. I have the windlass now and not the joke. Yesterday a lad from the lock cottage came down the towpath with a bucket of cold tea and showed me a mark scratched into the coping stone, a single curl that the old bargees used to say meant the water ran deeper on the far side. Nobody knows if it's true. He traced it with his finger and the stone was warm.

I keep thinking about how the lines swell where they turn, the way a wet rope thickens and pulls tight around the bollard. Mum always said you should never trust a curve that doesn't taper. I laughed at her for that. I'm not laughing now, because when the chamber finally filled the bow swung round in one long sweep, exactly like the mark on the stone, and for a second I could see the whole shape of it from the towpath.

The gate opens at six tomorrow. The lad says he'll let us through first if I bring him a proper cup of tea, the kind with the milk in before the water. I've told him I'll think about it. I'm going to think about it for about a minute and then I'm going to go and make it.

Write back before we reach Oxford. Tell me if you still have the old chart with the crossed-out depths.

Love, Nan
