Puzzle piece and heart on a foot
Other · Mixed · Photo
A grey puzzle piece outline with shaded linework sits on the top of a foot, with a smaller red heart partly overlapping its lower left side. The puzzle piece is rendered in greys with soft shading, while the heart is filled in red with darker edges. The tattoo is centred in the frame against plain pale skin, with the toes visible at the top of the photo.

The joiner at Scarrow Bridge cut puzzles from elm offcuts, one for every child in the parish, and he had a rule that no piece left his bench without its twin. Mrs Dunning reminded him of it the February the river came over the lane. Her boy Ned had carried his puzzle down to the water to show the ducks, and when he came home with his stockings wet through, one piece was missing from the box.

Walter Pyle, who kept the bridge toll and had never once been asked for anything, took the lid off his own mantel and sat at the kitchen table with a penknife. He had seen the shape of the gap in the frame. For three nights he whittled a piece to fit the hole, but it never sat flush. It always sat a shade too far to the left, as if the elm wanted to be somewhere else. On the fourth night he gave up and carved a heart instead, small and lopsided, and dyed it with beetroot juice from the cellar jar.
Ned was not pleased. He turned the heart over and said it was no good for a puzzle. Walter said that was the trouble with puzzles, they were only ever about finding the place a thing went. He pushed the heart into the open space at the lower edge of the grey outline, where it caught on the bevel and held, and Ned laughed for the first time since the flood.
The river gave the lost piece back in April, snagged under the bridge arch, grey and swollen. Mrs Dunning brought it to the toll house wrapped in a handkerchief. Walter looked at it a long while, then set it on the windowsill beside the heart, where the two sat together through every summer after, and nobody in Scarrow ever asked which of them had been the mistake.
