Peach and flowers on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a peach with two leaves on a short stem, with large open flowers climbing down the left side of the upper arm. The peach is drawn with bold outlines and hatched shading, and the phrase Life is peachy curves beneath it in plain lettering. The image is a close crop of the arm against a grey sleeve, with even lighting.

Cook on the coaster Marigold Rose was a job for a man who could make three hundred pounds of mutton last a fortnight, and I was not that man. Fourteen days out of Bilbao the fresh stores ran dry, and the only fruit left aboard was a crate of tinned peaches the owners had shipped for a harbour pageant that never happened. Captain Haddow found me in the galley at two in the morning, sitting on a flour sack and picking a label off a tin with his thumbnail.

'Your cooking would make a sailor weep,' he said, 'and not from the onions.' I told him the peaches were not for weeping. I opened a tin, sliced them thin, and laid them on a plate with the syrup, the way my mother did for the vicar on Sundays. He ate one slowly, the way a man reads a letter he already knows by heart, and said nothing for so long I thought he had dozed off on the sack.

Next morning the crew found the stove lit and a row of jam jars along the rail, the fruit set in them with a sprig of mint from the wheelhouse pot. Nobody asked for the recipe. The bosun, a man built like a bollard, carried one up to the forecastle and came back with his face very red, and for the rest of the passage the whole crew went about their watches humming.

We made Hull on the Thursday with two jars left. I gave one to the captain at the gangway. He turned it over in his hands, read the label I had written in pencil, and laughed so hard he had to sit down on the bollard.
