Hand holding a crystal ball with stars

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A hand with a bracelet at the wrist holds a shaded crystal ball, with five stars in teal and green orbiting and overlapping its edge. The outlines are bold and black, and the ball and hand are shaded with soft grey gradients. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a blurred shop background behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the wind up here has ears and it likes a good story as much as you do. My grandmother told me this one at the top of the Kestrel Gap, where the road gives up and becomes a goat track, and I tell it to you the same way, with the lamp turned low so the stars can see us.

There was a woman called Ilse Varro who kept the toll hut on that pass when the snow came early. She had a crystal ball her father left her, cloudy as milk, and she turned it in her palm every night the way other women count beads. Nobody believed it held anything but her own reflection. Then one winter the carters went missing on the north face, six wagons of salt and two boys, and the snow closed every path between the village and the sky.

She climbed the ridge with the ball in one hand and her silver bracelet knotted at her wrist. She held the ball up to the dark and asked the stars to come down and be lamps. Five of them did. They slid off the sky like sparks off an anvil and settled into the glass, green and teal as sea glass, and she walked ahead of the carters with the light cupped in her fingers.

They got home, every one of them. When the thaw came, the stars wanted to go back up, as stars do. Ilse opened her hand on the ridge and let them climb, one by one, until only a cold blue spark was left in the dark stone at her wrist. That is why the old women of this valley wear a bead on a bracelet, and why, if you look hard on a clear night, you will see five stars that seem to be falling back into place.
