Realistic peacock head with feathers on an arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A peacock's head and neck, with a crest of blue plumes, dominate the design, with an amber eye and a pale curved beak. Behind the bird, large tail feathers with teal, orange and green eye-spots fan out across the skin. The shading is smooth and detailed, with bright turquoise, green and orange tones and soft highlights on the neck and feathers.

The rain had found the gap under the awning again, so Nell Haddow was shifting bolts of teal silk off the trestle when the old man came splashing up Cloth Row with a folded umbrella under one arm and a carrier bag in the other. Water ran off the brim of his hat in a neat line. He set the bag down on her table as if it might go off.

Inside was a peacock's tail, or what was left of it, forty-odd feathers gone brittle at the quills. "My wife's," he said. "She said the eyes would look after us." Nell turned one over. The green had dulled to the colour of pond weed, but the eye at its tip still held a ring of orange and a bead of turquoise, and when she tilted it toward the lamp it caught the light like something awake. She offered him four pounds for the lot. He offered her the umbrella instead. Its spokes were bent and its cover was torn in a star, and the stitching was the sort nobody made any more.
They settled on the umbrella and a paper cup of tea from the urn on the corner. Nell mended the spokes that evening under the strip light at the back of the shop, sewing the rip closed with silk from the bolt that wouldn't sell. When the rain finally stopped at midnight she pinned one feather above the till, where the damp couldn't reach it. Whenever she looked up to count change, the amber eye was looking back at her.
