Peacock feather heart on an ankle
Ankle · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a peacock feather whose barbs form a heart outline, with the eye at the centre built up in orange, yellow, green and blue. Fine green and yellow strokes radiate across the feather to suggest its fibres, and the shading is soft and smooth. The design sits on pale skin against a plain background, with the feather stem running down the centre.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly spent and the wind off the salt flats doesn't care who it chills. No, don't reach for the kettle yet, you'll want the rest of this first. Ask Marisol's grandmother about the feather and she'll tell you it came down from the orbital gardens the year the glass dome over Port Ysolde cracked open. Some say the birds up there were kept for their colour, that the keepers ran grow-lamps so the eyes would stay bright in the dark.

Old Tobiah had one of those feathers pressed flat between two sheets of cracked resin. He kept it in a tin with a broken clasp, and every spring he held it up to the window and told the children the eye was really a door. You look through it, he said, and you see the one person still waiting for you to come home, but only if you keep the barbs in order.
Nobody believed him, least of all his son, who sold the tin to a scrap trader for three ration cards and a working torch. The trader passed it on, and the feather travelled south in the belly of a cargo drone, until one night in a market beneath the old dam a woman with a hammer and a fistful of copper wire bought it back for the price of a song.
She mended the clasp and set the tin on her windowsill. When she opened it again, the barbs had curled inward on their own, and the feather had folded into the shape of a heart, though no hand had touched it since Tobiah's time. She took it north the next morning, following the stem, and she never once looked back at the dam.
