Heart and roses on upper back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A black line forms a heart with a curling tail, and a cluster of roses in blue, purple, pink, red and orange grows from its lower edge with green leaves. The linework is bold and smooth, while the petals are shaded with soft colour gradients. The tattoo sits off-centre on the upper back, with the skin around it showing slight redness.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The blue rose had been dyed twice already, once in the wrong bath and once in the right one, and by Saturday morning Ida Fenn could still smell the alum on her fingers. The order book said cream and blush for the Ashworth wedding, but the bride's mother had written in the margin, in capitals pressed hard enough to tear the paper: BLUE, AND PURPLE LIKE THE OLD VAN.

Ida carried the buckets from the cold room and sorted them on the workbench by colour, the way Lenny used to sort his spanners. Pink, then red, then the orange ones that looked like a sunset over the reservoir. The heart frame sat by the back door where it had leaned for three years since the funeral. He had bent it from coat hanger wire on a wet afternoon, shaping the two lobes by eye, and then finished the lower point with a little curl like a fern uncoiling. He never explained the curl. She had never asked.

At the marquee, the bride's mother saw the blue first and put her hand over her mouth. She didn't say anything about the van. She just touched one petal and nodded, the way people do at graves. Ida threaded the roses along the wire's lower edge, tucking the green leaves behind them, and wound the stems tight with florist's tape.

When the arch was finished, the heart leaned into the marquee light with its tail still curling free. Ida left it that way. Some things were better unfinished, she decided, and she went to find a glass of water before the vows.
