Butterfly and heart swirl tattoo
Fine line · Mixed · Photo
A butterfly with one orange and yellow wing and a black, unshaded wing sits beside a black heart outline that ends in a curling tail. The heart and the antennae-like lines are drawn in thin, even black linework, while the butterfly wing has orange and yellow fill with darker veining. The plain, close crop puts the design at the centre of the frame against smooth skin.

Margery had written forty-one place cards by the time the marquee filled with the smell of cut grass and warm sugar, and she still had not decided on the flourish for Bea's. The bride wanted something small. Margery wanted something that would hold up when the ink dried and the cards were carried out to the lawn in a wicker basket.

She drew a heart first, the way her mother had taught her, a single unbroken line that folded back on itself at the top. Then she let the pen run on past the point, the stroke thinning into a curl at the bottom like a ribbon someone had tugged loose. It looked like a question mark that had given up on asking. She was pleased with it, and then a monarch came in under the tent flap, weaving between the centrepieces as though it had a seating plan of its own.
It landed on the card. Margery did not move. The butterfly opened and closed its wings, one gold and orange where the sun came through the canvas, the other gone dark where a drop of ink had bled into the paper beneath it.
Bea laughed when she saw it and said to leave the card exactly as it was, the heart and the tail and the small visitor. Margery wrote the name beside it in her neatest hand. Outside, someone began to play a fiddle badly, and the butterfly lifted and drifted towards the hedge, leaving a faint smudge of orange on the edge of the card.
