Peacock feather in teal, purple and red on an arm
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A peacock feather with a dark eye at its centre, drawn with flowing curled barbs that sweep across the design. The linework is dark and defined, with soft colour shading that moves from teal at one end through purple to red and orange at the other. The two photographs show the same tattoo from different angles, with the feather filling most of each frame against plain skin.

Every night at two the corridor lamps on Ward Seven dimmed, and every night old Mrs Pryce asked Nell Carrow to tell her again how the peacock lost its voice. Nell had heard it so often she could tell it while checking drips, one hand on the cannula and the other smoothing the blanket.

The story went like this. Long ago, a farm above the Dales kept a peacock whose tail was a colour nobody had a name for. The farmer's wife loved that tail more than her own children. One hard winter she sold its feathers to a travelling man who promised her warmth. He carried them over the fells, and the bird stood in the snow until its voice froze in its throat and it never called again. Only the eyes stayed on the feathers, to watch whoever had taken them.
On the last night of February, with the storm rattling the windows, Mrs Pryce stopped mid-sentence and pointed at the foot of her bed. A feather lay across the blanket, teal at the quill end, purple through the middle, and red at the tip where it looked scorched. Nell picked it up. The dark eye at its centre looked straight at her, and the cold went out of the room like a door being shut.
The old woman was asleep by morning, breathing easily for the first time in a week. Nell put the feather in her tunic pocket and walked home across the wet car park while the sky went pale over the moors. When the porter came to strip the bed, there was a single curled barb on the pillow, still warm, turned towards the window as though something outside had finally called.
