A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mairead had been trimming the wicks for eleven minutes when the relief boat sounded its horn wrong, two short blasts where there should have been one long, and she set the brass snuffer down on the sill. Below, the sea was the colour of pewter. Her father had taught her that the Fresnel lens was a mandala made of glass, a hundred rings of prism that bent one small flame into a sweep visible twenty miles out. He called it the sun's own doily. She had never once thought of it as something that could be lost.

The lens had cracked in the February gales, a clean line through the third ring, and the mainland engineers said a replacement would not come before spring. Until then the light ran through a borrowed rig from the old depot, dimmer and uneven. On the kitchen table lay the peacock feather Iain from the supply boat had left behind, its eye open in green and violet, catching the lamp whenever she tilted it. She had kept it because it looked like the lens in the dark: one watching point ringed by order.

That night she climbed to the gallery with the feather tucked inside her oilskin. She worked it into the gap where a sliver of glass had gone and angled it until the eye caught the flame. The beam split, softened and came out as a bloom of teal and gold across the water. Out on the black shelf, a fishing boat that had been drifting toward the Skerry Rocks swung its bow for home.

In the morning the engineers found the feather still wedged in the ring, bent but whole. They asked her what it was doing in the lens. Mairead said the light had needed a second eye for a while.
