Peacock feather tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A peacock feather runs diagonally down the forearm, with its eye near the top in orange, yellow and blue. The barbs are outlined in black and filled with layered teal, blue and purple ink, with the fine tip curling at the bottom. The feather fills most of the forearm against a plain, pale skin background.

The gulls have stopped following the boat since the autumn gales, so you row out alone with the paraffin and the logbook tucked under your oilskin. Tide is making against the rocks at Scarrow Point, and the light has been dark four nights now. Your brother Tam used to say the lamp throws a feather of gold out over the water when the lens is turning right, and you have never once seen it, only heard him swear about it.

Climbing the iron ladder, you count the rungs the way your mother taught you, forty-one, then the gallery, then the glass. The mechanism sits in its brass cradle, cold as a church bell. Someone has left a peacock's feather pinned under the clockwork weight, one long barbed quill gone the colour of deep harbour water, its eye ringed in orange and yellow with a blue pupil like a boat's lantern. You do not remember Tam keeping birds. You do not remember much of anything since the funeral.
You pull the feather free and the mechanism shivers under your palm. Turning the crank, you feel the weight drop by slow notches, and when the great lens finally catches the dusk, the beam slides out across the swell and lays a shimmering blue-gold arc over the water. The feather in your fist is wet at the tip, though the glass is dry. You tuck it behind your ear and start the long row home before the tide turns.
