Peacock feather tattoo on a lower leg
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A long peacock feather runs vertically down the outer lower leg, with its shaded barbs and fine strands drawn in dark greens and blacks. The feather's eye sits near the lower half, rendered in blue, teal, gold and orange tones with soft gradients. The photograph is taken from a low side angle, with a patterned green and white skirt and a teal floor filling the background.

The customs hut at Kelso smelled of wet wool and instant coffee, and Marjorie Tenby had been holding the same brown envelope for twenty minutes. Inside it was a letter from a man named Aldo Breck, who had kept a peacock in his hill garden above Lanark and who had asked, in faded fountain pen, that someone bring one feather across before the estate was sold. The officer behind the glass turned her passport over twice, as though the cover might confess something.

"Anything to declare, Mrs Tenby?"
"A feather. Sixteen inches, perhaps. Pressed between two pages of the Radio Times."
He looked up slowly. Somewhere a kettle clicked off. She thought of Aldo on the bench under the pear tree, telling her that the eye was not an eye at all but a door that opened only to people who had stopped expecting it. She had laughed then. She did not laugh now.
The officer lifted the flap, read the magazine's cover, and let out a breath through his nose. "The Radio Times," he said, and stamped her form without opening it.
Outside, the grey light on the barrier was the colour of old pewter. Marjorie tucked the envelope into her coat and walked the last stretch of the road with her skirt catching the wind, the way Aldo's garden gate had caught it every summer she had known him. At the verge she stopped and took the feather out, and in the thin sun the eye flared teal, then gold, then a deep sea-blue she had forgotten existed.
