Black and grey realism tattoo of an eye with long lashes and cursive script along its outline, on the upper thigh.

Realistic eye with script on the thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded realistic eye with a detailed iris and pupil sits at the centre of the design, framed by long, fine-lined lashes. Cursive script follows the upper and lower lash line, and the pale skin and white dress frame the tattoo against a soft, out-of-focus background. The work uses smooth greyscale shading with crisp black linework.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the mint, it gets into everything. You want the old tale of the Wellsby garden? Then hush and listen, because I tell it only once a summer, when the bees are drunk on the lavender and nobody has anything better to do.

Old Mr Halloran kept the walled garden at Thornmere when the gates still had their hinges. Set into a stone pillar beside the sundial was a carved eye that his grandfather had made, with ivy growing thick along its lashes and a line of words cut beneath it that nobody could quite finish reading. Every morning Halloran walked the gravel and told the eye what had bloomed overnight, and the gardeners said he was never once wrong.

One March the frost took the whole south border, and the gardener's boy, Tobias, who was seventeen and cross about everything, swore the eye had blinked. Halloran laughed at him. But that night he went out with a lantern, and the stone was wet on one side only, as if it had been crying, or had simply been awake while the rest of the house slept.

Halloran never said what he found behind the pillar. Tobias says there was a seed packet, dated the day the wall went up, and a note that said only, keep looking, the roses remember. The next spring the south border came up red as a wound, and nobody could explain it, and the eye, the old folk say, has been watching the garden ever since.
