Peacock feather tattoo on a shoulder
Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a stylised peacock feather sits on the upper shoulder near the collarbone. The feather has a teal and green outline with blue, orange and yellow tones and a thin curling tail extending downward. The background is softly out of focus, and the composition is a close crop of the shoulder, neck and ear.

You find the feather on the third day out from Valparaíso, folded inside a chart of the Horn at the bottom of a cabin trunk nobody claims. The quill is still glossy after who knows how long in the dark. The steward swears it came aboard with the mail sacks. The purser swears it did not. You pin it above the chart table with a brass tack because it seems rude to bin it, and because its one painted eye, ringed in teal and green, keeps catching the lamp every time you bend over the soundings.

By the Doldrums the sea has gone flat as poured tin, and the cook, a Shetlander called Minna Halvorsen, starts leaving a saucer of sweet tea beside the chart each morning. She says a ship needs something to look after. You say it is a feather. She says that is what she meant. The blue in it goes darker when the clouds pass over, then bright again, and by the time the wind comes back you have stopped pretending you do not check on it before you check the glass.
The Horn takes the feather off the tack in a squall that rolls the ship onto her beam. You watch it skate across the wet deck, orange and gold, its thin tail curling after it like a question nobody on board can answer. You go after it on your knees, past the cask lashings, and catch it against the rail with your palm just as a green sea breaks over the bow.
At Montevideo you press it flat inside the chart, in the margin where the course home is marked in pencil. The tail still curls, a little bent now, toward the edge of the paper, as though it has somewhere else it would rather be going.
