Four sea turtles on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
Four solid black sea turtle silhouettes sit in a vertical line, each slightly smaller than the last, on the upper back. Faint grey swirls trail behind them, adding movement to the design. The photo is warm toned and shows only the back, shoulder and a silver cross necklace.

Sit down, the lot of you, the last train's not due for an hour and I've only got the one story left in me. Saltmarsh Halt was a wet little platform then, with the shingle banging against the sea wall, and the stationmaster, Amos Pell, kept a lamp on a hook by the ticket hatch so he could see the water coming.

That night a storm had shoved the tide right over the tracks, and out of the grey came a turtle as broad as a tea tray, then three more, each one a shade smaller than the one before, nose to tail like a family crossing a road. They came up the cutting after the rails, because they had taken the shining lines for a kind of tide that only ran one way, inland, and they meant to see where it went.
Amos didn't shout. He opened the wicket gate, set the lamp down, and watched the big one heave itself over the lip of the platform. The others followed, leaving a dark trail of wet on the planks that caught the lamplight like ink. The smallest hung back at the ticket hatch, peering at the timetable on the wall as if it could read it, and the signal down the line flicked from red to green.
Then the little one turned round. It had worked out what the rails were doing: they curved back towards the marsh, and the marsh ran straight into the sea. So off they all went, down the ramp one after another, and by morning there was nothing on the platform but four faint swirls drying in the sun. Amos swore the sea had sent them to fetch the train. Mostly he just said the water always gets the last word.
