Right, shift up, and mind the pigeon, he's been eyeing your crisps since the lift broke. Now. You know the peacock on the eleventh floor, the one who wouldn't leave? No, don't look at me like that, Sunita, I'm getting to it.

Nobody on Carrow House knew where he came from. The lift men said a lorry, the lad on nine said a circus that folded in the autumn. What everybody agreed on was that he walked the balconies at dawn like a landlord inspecting his property, head high, that little crest bristling in the wind. Old Mr Adebayo swore he counted the eyes on that tail every morning, and every morning there were more, as if the feathers were growing new windows.

The winter the heating failed across the whole block, the peacock stopped strutting. He sat on the rail outside flat 1104 with his tail folded down like a wet umbrella. Mrs Okafor's boy, Dylan, who was seven and had a torch in his coat pocket, climbed onto the bin store wall with a flask of soup. Nobody told him not to. The peacock let him come close enough to see the little clusters of flowers climbing his neck like frost on glass.

And here's the thing. When Dylan pulled his blanket over the rail, the peacock spread that tail one last time, and every eye on it turned towards the flats across the car park. Lights came on, one window, then another, until the whole estate was lit and every single one of them was looking back. So when your lift breaks, you go out on the balcony and you look up. Now get your coats, the soup's gone cold.
