Hibiscus and plumeria tribal design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A bold black linework design of a hibiscus flower and two plumeria blossoms, joined by curling spirals and tribal-style bands. A spiral sun shape sits at the top left, and a wave-like band of notched black shapes runs along the lower edge. The design is solid black on white with no shading, and the composition sweeps diagonally from top left to bottom right.

The plumeria had dropped in the night, the way they always did after a squall, and Hetta wanted every one of them threaded before the lamps came on along the quay. She sat on the step of the net shed with a needle and a ball of waxed cord, and I sat beside her pretending I was not counting the boats coming round the breakwater.

Three of them were still out past the spiral of the sea wall, where the tide turns sharp over the shelf. Hetta could tell a boat by its wake before anyone could make out the hull. She said the swell came in bands, notched like the teeth of a comb, and that you read the water the way you read a hand of cards: the small waves told you what the big ones were about to do.
The sun went down behind the lighthouse in a rush of orange, and the last boat, the Constance Jane, came round the point low in the water with her lamp swinging. Hetta stood up slowly, one knee cracking, and held out the garland. Four flowers, two white and two gone pink at the edges, with a sprig of something bitter she had picked from the rocks.
'Tie that to the rail,' she said. 'Let them smell it before they see us.' I did. The boat was home by full dark, and the crew came up the slip with their hands raw from the lines, and the first thing any of them did was touch those flowers, as if they had been waiting all day to be told the sea had let them go.
