Peacock tattoo across a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
A bare foot rests on green grass, with the toes painted blue at the nails. A detailed peacock covers the top of the foot, with a blue head and neck curving toward the ankle and green tail feathers fanned across the instep. The feathers show dark eye-spot markings, and the shading uses soft blue and green gradients against the skin.

Walter Pyle kept a ledger of the peacock's eyes. Every September he went out on the wet lawn with a tin of cracked maize and counted the blue-green rings that had come loose from the tail, the way a publican counts coins after a fair. This year the nephew from Tunbridge Wells arrived with a cheque and a crate. He wanted the bird for the Hall terrace, pinned and dressed like a pudding for the Michaelmas guests. Walter said nothing over supper. That night he walked out past the sundial in his nightshirt, sat on the cold grass with the ledger on his knee, and talked to the peacock the way he talked to his dog, plainly, about rain and rent and the price of wire.
The bird came down from the wall with its neck curved low and its fan lifted like a lamp turned up. Walter tallied what he had. A lease with thirty years left on it. A debt to a man long dead. "I'll give you the book," he said, "if you give me the lawn." The peacock folded its tail, took one step through the wet, and the feathers rattled against the grass like a shower of coins.
In the morning the nephew found the terrace bare and one eye feather pinned under a stone at the foot of the sundial. The ledger lay open at September. Beside the last line someone had drawn a fresh eye in blue ink, still wet, and beneath it, in Walter's careful capitals, PAID.
