Pencil drawing of a mechanical compass design
Black and grey · Flash
A greyscale pencil drawing shows a central circular dial with radial segments and small tick marks, framed by a ring and mechanical details. Four ornate, tapering arms extend north, south, east and west, with curling, organic edges that give the emblem a compass-like symmetry. Soft graded shading sits on a pale background, with fine hatching defining the metal and the dial's depth.

The weights had sunk a full turn since the last watch, and when Ada laid her palm on the brass drum it shivered under her skin like something alive. Eleven steps below her the sea was throwing itself at the rock. She had until the bell rang two to get the lamp turning again, or the Gannet Shoal would take the Margery Lowe in the dark, the way it had taken her father's boat.

The mechanism was older than the tower. Her grandmother had told her the makers in Falmouth cut the dial from a ship's binnacle, eight segments for the winds, and fitted the iron arms so the whole frame could be swung to face whichever coast needed warning. Ada fitted the crank, set her boot against the housing and heaved. The pawl clicked, caught, slipped, caught again.
Halfway through the third turn she saw the marks scratched inside the ring, faint as pencil on the old tin. They were not numbers. They were bearings, dozens of them, each with a name and a date beside it. Ships that had passed the light and never been logged. She ran her thumb along the last line, Margery Lowe, and the date was tomorrow.
She swung the north arm round toward the shoal, and the lamp slid out over the black water like a finger pointing the way home. For once the frame did not groan when it reached its mark. Ada sat down on the cold gallery floor, took the pencil from behind her ear and, beside her own father's name, wrote the word held.
