The veil had snagged on the lychgate for the third time, and Nell Varley had stopped pretending it was an accident. Her cousin Pippa tugged from one side, the vicar's wife from the other, and somewhere behind them the church bell gave a flat, uncertain clang, as if it had lost count of the hour.

The cat was sitting on the wall above them, the colour of old pencil lead, with a ruff of pale fur that lifted in the wind like the edge of a feather. Nobody in Ashcombe claimed him. He had turned up the summer Nell's father died and had stayed on, sleeping in the bell tower and coming down only for the fish scraps behind the Hendersons' shop. Nell had decided years ago that he was a sign of something, though she had never settled on what.

Pippa's hand went to her pocket, then to her throat, then back to the pocket. The ring was gone. They searched the porch, the pews and the lining of the hymn books while the guests shifted on the path. Nell looked up and saw the cat's tail curl over the wall, and in his mouth a small silver band turning like a star in the grey afternoon light.

He dropped it at her feet, sat down and washed one paw with great dignity while the whole village waited. Nell picked the ring up and it was warm. She slid it onto her finger, and the veil came free with a soft tearing sound. When she looked back the wall was empty, and only a single feather lay on the flagstones, pale as breath, pointing towards the hill where her father used to walk.
