Two wolves forming a heart
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of two wolves with their heads close together, one dark and one pale, forming a heart-shaped outline. The fur is rendered with soft graphite shading and loose, feathered strokes, and long wisps of line trail downward from the base of the heart. The image is monochrome and centred on a plain background.

Eli drew the wolves on the back of a spent shift ticket, pressing so hard the pencil shone. He sat on the step of the lamp room with his cap pushed back, and Wilf leaned over his shoulder pretending not to care. Dark-haired and fair, the two of them had shared one bench at the Eldon seam since they were fourteen, and the whole of Ashgill Terrace called them the wolves anyway, because they walked home with their heads together as if they were passing secrets back and forth.

"That's not us," Wilf said.
"It's whatever you want it to be," Eli said, and went on shading the fur along one side until it looked wet.
In March the timbering gave way on the north face. Wilf had been on the far end of the shift, and Eli went down with the rescue men and dug with his bare hands until the skin came off them. My mother said afterwards that he didn't come up for two days. When Wilf was finally carried out, he was alive and furious about his boots, which had been cut off him on the cage. Eli sat beside the bed with the shift ticket folded in his top pocket and never mentioned it.
I found the drawing in the spring, tucked inside the lid of a tin on the windowsill. The two heads still leaned together, the dark one resting its muzzle on the pale one's brow. Long wisps ran down from the base of the heart and trailed off the bottom of the paper, as though something was dripping, or pulling away. Eli had left the last inch of the page empty, and I think he meant it that way.
