Kitten with leaves and beaded pendant design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A kitten's face faces forward, with large almond-shaped eyes, detailed fur strokes and a small nose and mouth. Leaves rise behind the head, and a jewelled pendant hangs from a beaded chain across the forehead, with more strands of beads and drops below the chin. The drawing uses fine pencil-style linework and soft shading on a plain pale background, with no colour.

The bead chain went missing on the third day out of Falmouth, and by the fourth the whole mess was blaming the cabin boy. I knew better. I had watched Duchess, our pale ship's cat, sit on the lid of a passenger's trunk for the best part of an hour, batting at the brass clasp as though it owed her money.

Mrs Ardley was a widow bound for Valparaiso with a hatbox, a grey parrot and a temper to match both. She had lost her late husband's garnet pendant and would not be consoled by anyone. I found the chain at dusk, snarled in the bay leaves I'd hung to dry above the range, and Duchess asleep on top of it like a hen on a clutch of eggs, the jewel tucked neatly beneath her chin.
I should have handed it straight over. Instead I sat on an upturned bucket with my pipe unlit and considered the cat, who opened one eye and gave me the look the old cook used to give a stew that had been salted by a boy. Forty years at sea and I had never once been judged by a kitten. I let her keep it until the next blow, when the galley floor went under green water and every loose thing went skating. She came through with the pendant still swinging from the bead chain across her brow, and not one drop lost.
Mrs Ardley wept, then laughed, then gave Duchess a dried herring and a fresh length of string. The cat took the herring. I still find the odd bead rolling under the stove, and I have stopped pretending it is the boy's fault.
