Pencil sketch of a feathered wing
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a single wing with layered, pointed feathers that taper towards the tips, drawn in outline with soft grey shading. The feathers grow in overlapping rows from the upper left to a curved lower edge, with darker strokes separating each feather. The plain white background is uncluttered, and faint construction lines appear in the lower left corner.

The gatehouse at Kestle Rowe has lost its roof, but the wing above the arch is still there, carved in grey stone and laid in rows like shingles on a fishing boat. You have spent three weeks on the scaffold scraping moss from its tips, and the old mason's ledger says it was cut for a messenger who rode out one spring and never rode back. Nobody in the village will say his name. They only say the wing must not be chipped.

On the eleventh morning the wind came off the sea so hard the scaffold boards sang, and you pressed your palm flat against the stone to steady yourself. Under the green crust, one of the lower feathers gave a little, the way mortar does when it has been packed around something soft. You worked the chisel in carefully. What came away was not stone but a curl of brittle horn, then another, and then a whole sheaf of them, grey and pointed, fanned out exactly where the carver had meant them to be cut.
You counted them on the planks while the gulls argued overhead. Nineteen feathers, each one tucked into a hollow the mason had sealed with lime and ash. The last one was longer than your hand and still smelled faintly of rain.
That evening you opened the ledger again. Beneath the messenger's final entry, in the mason's cramped hand, someone had written a single line: the feathers stay in the wall, so whatever comes back will know where to land.
