Pencil sketch of a phoenix with flowing tail
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A graphite pencil drawing of a stylised phoenix head and raised wing, with a long tail of flowing feather-like lines that spirals down the length of the strip. The linework is fine and mostly unbroken, with soft pencil shading on the wing and tail to create depth and contrast. The drawing is rendered in greys on cream paper and sits centred on a larger sketchbook page with faint preliminary marks in the background.

You reach the top of Hollin Gate an hour before the snow, and the old hairpin road below looks like a ribbon someone let slide down the scree. Ruth, the warden at the refuge, hands you a flask without asking and nods towards the ridge, where a single bird holds still in the wind, wings lifted as though it has forgotten how to come down.

"Kestrel," she says. "Or it was, before the mist took the valley." You know it is no kestrel. Kestrels do not hang with their tails streaming off the crag like smoke from a wet fire. This one's tail spills over the edge and down through the gorge in long grey loops, following the beck, following the drovers' track, following every bend you have ever taken in the wrong gear. Ruth says the shepherds here used to call it the Ember Wife, and that nobody under sixty has ever seen it twice.
You spent eleven winters clearing this road for the council, and you have never once seen the bird come back after a fall. Ruth tells you about Dennis Carrick, who lost his van in the gorge in 1978 and walked out two days later with a broken collarbone, swearing the bird circled him the whole way down, close enough that he could hear the feathers. Nobody believed him, and he never once told the story sober after that.
You pour the last of the tea onto the stones and watch the steam climb the same way the wing does. Then you pocket the flask, turn the key, and take the first bend slowly, the way you would follow a long tail down into the valley.
