Pencil sketch of a triangle and circle design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn pencil sketch on paper shows a design built around an upright triangle enclosing a rounded central shape with a vertical rod rising from its top. Feather-like wisps curl up either side, small star marks sit around the outline, and a row of looping swirls runs along the base. The linework is soft and shaded in grey graphite, with no colour and no skin visible.

The tide had been out since noon, and Ada Pellow was still standing on the causeway with the rod in her fist when the heron came down on the sand beside her, folding its grey wings like a clerk closing a ledger. Her uncle had warned her about the rod. Every keeper at Saltmarrow had been warned, and every one of them had used it anyway, because the causeway had to be crossed, and the rod, lifted at the right hour, parted the water like a curtain.

She had lifted it that morning for the carter's cart and the doctor's mare. Now the sea was coming back in a white line, faster than any sea should, and the three iron stakes she had driven at the edge of the flats were turning slowly on their own. The old refuge hut behind her hummed through its stone. The heron watched her with one flat yellow eye and did not move, and she understood that it had been waiting for her to notice it.
She laid the rod down across her knees, the way her uncle had shown her to lay down a fish she did not want. The heron lifted its head and said nothing, but a single feather dropped from its breast and turned over and over until it settled on the wet sand between her boots. The water came up to the stakes, stopped, and drew back a hand's width, like a dog told to stay.
Ada picked up the feather and not the rod. She walked back across the causeway with the sea breathing on either side of her, and when she reached the hut she pinned the feather inside her collar, where it stayed for the rest of the season, and the tide kept to its own hours.
