Stippled cat creature drawing
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A pen and ink drawing on paper of a cat-like creature with large pointed ears, three round eyes marked with crosses, and whisker lines across the muzzle. The tail is a crescent shape filled with dense dotwork and small swirling marks, while the head uses fine stippling and hatching for shading. The drawing is photographed at an angle on a light background in black and grey tones.

Tuesday, 14th January. Frost again, so hard the water trough had a lid of grey glass this morning and Dad had to break it with the shovel handle. The cat came in during the thaw two nights ago, or I think it was the cat. Nobody has seen its face properly. It sits on top of the feed bin with its three eyes all turned towards us at once, as though it is counting.

It has a tail like a new moon, thick at the curve and furred so densely it looks stippled with frost. When it walks it leaves the tail behind in the straw like a bent crescent that keeps its shape. Mum says it is a Manx that has been left out too long, but Manx cats do not have ears like long brown leaves, ragged at the edges and pricked up as if listening to the barn roof ticking.
Last night the power went and we ate by the Aga. I took the torch out to check the ewes and found the cat asleep in the lambing pen, all three eyes shut. The fine marks across its muzzle caught the light like lines of rain. When I shone the torch on it, it did not blink, not once, and I stood there longer than I meant to.
I left a saucer of milk by the door and it was gone by morning, though nothing else in the yard had been disturbed. Tonight I will leave the bin lid off and see whether it sleeps curled in the crook of its own tail. Dad says we should not name it. I have named it Sickle already, which is what he calls the moon when it is thin.
