Colour botanical tattoo of pink peonies, a grey flower, green leaves and red berries across a woman's left shoulder and upper back.

Peonies and berries across a shoulder

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two large pink and red peony blooms with a smaller muted grey flower, surrounded by green leaves and clusters of red berries. The linework is defined and the petals are shaded with soft gradients from pale pink to deep red, giving them depth. The design wraps over the shoulder and fades towards the upper arm, with the bare skin of the back and a dark top framing it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth Ancell had counted the trains through Halfpenny Cross for eleven years, and the 4.12 had never once stopped for her. It came round the bend at a pace that made the gravel shiver, its windows full of heads bowed over phones, and she stood on the down platform with a trug of cuttings wrapped in wet newspaper and waited for it to pass.

The cuttings were peony roots her mother had split in October, dark and knotted, along with a few rosehip stems still carrying hard orange fruit. Her mother had kept the big pink peonies along the goods yard fence since before the line was electrified, and when the stationmaster's house was sold, nobody thought to dig them out. Ruth had spent the spring hauling them back from the brambles one bucket at a time.

On Thursday a woman in a long dark coat got off the stopping service with a holdall and no ticket to speak of. She walked the length of the platform, looked at the trug, and asked whether the grey-purple flower by the fence was a cranesbill or something older. Ruth said her mother had called it a widow's pansy and would never say why.

The woman took a rosehip from the stem, rolled it between finger and thumb, and tucked it into her pocket. Then the whistle sounded, the gravel lifted, and the 4.12 came thundering in to stop, for once, at the platform. The woman climbed aboard without looking back. Ruth stood with the empty trug and the smell of wet soil, and watched the carriages pull away.
