Red rose on a shoulder

Traditional · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A red rose in bloom sits on the top of the shoulder, with its petals shaded in red and orange and outlined in dark ink. Grey-black leaves and a bud curve around the rose and down the arm. The skin is in soft focus against a blurred background, with the rose as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have watered the bush behind the pumps with grey washing-up water for six weeks, because the tank ran dry in June and the county would not send another. Nothing about this stretch of the A-road is generous, not the heat, not the lorries, not the dust that settles on the windscreen before the wipers are even warm. Yet the one red rose keeps opening, its petals the colour of a tail-light seen through haze, and its leaves stay dark and glossy against the bleached breeze-block wall.

Wes from the haulage yard stops for diesel on Thursday and leans on the pump. "Thing should be dead," he says. You tell him it was planted by the woman who ran this place before you, who swore a rose would outlast any owner. You show him the bud that has not yet opened, tight as a fist, and he says he has seen roses like that in a nursery in Lincolnshire and they never survive a summer. You pay him no mind and fill his tank, and he drives off with the radio on, shaking his head at the dust.

When the sun drops behind the ridge you walk out with the last of the grey water and find the bud has split. Its petals are edged with orange where the low light catches them. You kneel in the gravel and tip the bucket slowly, the way she taught you, and you decide that tomorrow you will cut the bloom and set it in a jam jar on the counter, where the next driver will see it before he sees anything else.
