Black and grey rose with mandala on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with layered petals and leaves is the focal point, shaded with fine stippled dots and outlined in black. A geometric mandala-style pattern fills the left side of the design, with a pointed leaf motif above it. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, with the skin tone showing through the lighter areas of the petals.

The snow had been coming since Tuesday, and by the third night the lane up to Cawsey Fell had vanished under it. Maud Tennant stood at the bar of the Hollin Inn with a tray of cold tea, listening to the guests argue about whether the stove would last until morning. Her father had always said the stove was the inn's heart, and that a heart could be coaxed but never hurried.

Upstairs, in the room at the end of the passage, the surveyor who had come for the old mill site was sleeping badly. She carried up a hot brick wrapped in flannel and found him sitting on the bed with a pencil, drawing on the back of a bill. He had sketched a rose, its petals stacked like folded paper, and beside it a circle of lines that repeated and repeated until they looked like frost on a pane. "My sister's birthday," he said, not looking up. "I can't get the petals to sit right."

Maud took the pencil and showed him how the light fell, how a petal's pale edge was simply the paper left alone. Downstairs the stove sighed. She thought of the frost ferns on the kitchen window, how each morning they grew into rosettes that her father called mandalas, though he had never seen one in a book.

By morning the road was ploughed and the surveyor was gone, but the bill lay on the bedside table. Someone had added a stippled rose in the corner, dots thick at the heart and thinning toward the edges, and beneath it, in careful capitals, THANK YOU FOR THE BRICK. Maud folded it into her apron and went down to light the stove.
