Colour tattoo of a pink peony with green leaves and bold black outlines on the inner forearm, in a neo-traditional botanical style.

Peony and leaves on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large peony bloom with layered pink and rose petals sits at the centre of the design, with its outer petals drawn in a stepped, rounded outline. Several dark green leaves with visible central veins surround the flower on the stems and sides, all enclosed in thick black linework. The petals are softly shaded in pinks and reds, and the leaves use muted olive greens, set against bare skin on a forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The peonies arrive at the village hall at ten past eight, two hours before anyone expects them. Dilys, who has run the florist on Chapel Street for thirty years, carries the first box in herself because the driver has already lost a crate of ranunculus to a wasp. You sign the clipboard, tear the lid off, and find the blooms still tight, pink as the inside of a shell, their outer petals ruffled like a skirt someone has sat on.

Your job is the table centres and the arch, not the bride's nerves. Dilys shows you how to strip the lower leaves so nothing rots in the water, and how to tip each head a finger's width so it bends as if listening. "They open whether you want them to or not," she says. "Best to let them think it was their idea."

By noon the hall smells of wet earth and cut stems. The groom's uncle asks for a peony for his buttonhole, and you refuse, gently, because every bloom is spoken for. Then Nia slips in through the side door with a cup of tea, looks at the centrepiece, and laughs at how the dark leaves crowd the vase. She asks you to leave one flower on its own on the windowsill, for her grandmother, who grew the same pink variety in a yard in Rhyl and died in March.

You set it there, a single bloom on a bare stem, its head heavy, its leaves dark against the glass. When the speeches begin it has already opened another ring of petals, and nobody has noticed but you.
