Black and grey botanical tattoo of peonies, roses and buds with shaded leaves on a woman's upper thigh.

Peony and rose cluster on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two large peony blooms with a smaller rose bud above and a closed bud below, joined by shaded leaves and small sprigs. The linework is fine and detailed, with soft grey shading that builds petal volume and depth. The design climbs diagonally up the outer thigh, and the image is framed by a hand with red nails resting on a patterned skirt.

The frost took the lower bed in one night, Ruth, every peony I had staked for the Harrogate order. I went out at six with a lantern and found the stems black and bowed like wet string. Only the two old plants by the wall had held, the pale ones Father brought from Thornby the year before he died, and the rose we grafted onto their roots that spring, which had not yet decided whether it was a rose or a weed.

Mr Adair's man came up the lane at nine asking whether we could still supply the cluster he wanted for the inn's new sign: two full blooms, a bud above, a closed one below, and leaves all the way down. I told him the peonies were spent. He stood in the snow staring at the wall as though I had hidden something from him. So I cut the two survivors at dawn, wrapped them in newspaper and a tea towel, and drove them over with the heater roaring.

The landlady, a woman called Pell who had buried a husband the winter before, met me in the yard and took the flowers without a word. She set them in a jug on the bar, where the fire could reach them, and by evening they had opened further than I would have believed. Men who had come in to argue about the drains sat with their pints and looked at them instead.

I am telling you this because the bud we grafted, the one still shut tight on the wall, will not open before March, and I have decided I will wait for it too. Come up at Easter and bring the good secateurs. Pell says the inn has a spare room and a fire that never goes out.
