Black and grey peony tattoo on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show a black and grey tattoo of large open flowers, likely peonies, with layered petals and dark leaves wrapping around the upper arm towards the elbow. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading inside the petals and stippled texture at the flower centres. The right image shows the full arm of a person in a grey t-shirt and jeans, with a small fern tattoo visible higher up the forearm.

Ada had counted the crates twice before the bosun stopped asking her to stop. Eleven wooden boxes, lashed under the forecastle, each packed with straw and the dark knotted roots of peonies cut from a monastery garden outside Canton. The ship had been out of Whampoa for nineteen weeks, and the roots had turned soft in the wet heat of the Indian Ocean, then grey, then nearly nothing. Only the third crate still smelled of earth.

She knelt on the wet planking each morning and lifted the sacking to check for buds. The sailors called her the gardener, which was a joke, because she had signed on as a cook's mate and had never owned a trowel in her life. But her father had grown peonies in Pembrokeshire, great heavy-headed things that bowed their petals to the ground after rain, and he had taught her to read a bud the way other people read a letter.

On the fortieth day off the Cape, a green shoot pushed through the straw in the third crate. Ada didn't call anyone. She fetched a tin cup of seawater, tipped it gently over the soil, and sat back on her heels while the thin stem curled toward the grey light coming through the hatch.

When the ship docked at Bristol in October, the shoot had three leaves and a bud the size of a walnut. She carried the crate down the gangplank herself, past customs men who wanted a signature, and set it on the quay. Somewhere behind her a bell rang for the tide. She didn't look back at the sea.
