Peony and leaves on a shoulder blade
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large peony bloom with layered, ruffled petals sits at the centre of the design, with several leaves and a curved stem extending to the left and down. The linework is fine and dark, with soft shading and stippled dots giving the petals volume and depth. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on smooth skin of a person's upper back, with the shoulder blade and a blurred background visible.

Dear Ines,

The big top went up again on Tuesday, though only just. Mr Pell wanted the canvas patched before the Ashford fair, and the patches came from the old banner we used to paint for the lion act, so now the lion has a grey square over his left flank like a bandage nobody asked for. The ringmaster says people don't look at the animals any more. They look at the tent and see the mend.
Your peony cuttings have done better than anything in the wagons. I potted the last two in the tin bath behind the ticket box, and one has put out three buds in the cold. I know you think it's foolish to spend a week's tips on a bush when the generator diesel costs what it does, but Cora came round yesterday in her dressing gown just to stand in front of it. She said the petals looked like the ruffles on the trapeze girl's costume before the moths got in, and she cried a bit, then said she was being soft.
Here is the thing I meant to tell you. Pell has sold the horse wagon to a man in Kent who wants it for a pub. He is paying off the feed bill and not much else. So I think this may be the last season the peonies see from the lot, and I have decided I will take the bath with me when we go, however heavy, and set it on the step of whatever room I find.
Write soon, and tell me if the bloom comes out before the frost.
Love, Maud
