Peony sleeve on an upper arm

Japanese · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A woman's arm and shoulder carry a large floral sleeve of peonies, photographed from the side with her face out of frame. A red bloom sits mid-arm, surrounded by greyscale peonies and dark, bold leaves. Soft grey shading gives the flowers depth against the skin, and the design wraps around the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The peonies had been out three days when Maud Ferrier found the ants inside the red one, crawling over the crumpled petals like sailors working a deck. She stood in the wet grass at the bottom of the walled garden with the secateurs open in her hand, deciding whether the bloom was worth saving or whether her father would call it lost, the way he called everything lost once the frost had come and gone.

Ned had planted the bed the year she was born, forty-odd roots bought from a nursery in Kent that had since shut its gates. He grew the greyscale ones at the back, pale heads that looked washed in milk, and kept the dark-leafed plants against the south wall where the sun reached them last. The red one had come up by accident, a seedling from a root he meant to dig out, and for years he left it alone and called it the cheeky one.

After the funeral she had walked the beds every morning with a notebook, counting buds and writing down what she didn't know. The cheeky one was the only thing that had not gone quiet on her. She cut it at the base of the stem, carried it up the path past the potting shed and the dead rhubarb, and set it in the blue jug on the kitchen windowsill.

The ants came out first, one by one, onto the cold glass. Maud left the window open and sat at the table with her tea until the last of them had found the way out, then went back down the garden for the next bloom, because the bed was still full and nobody else was going to cut it.
