Poppies and chrysanthemum on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two open poppy flowers with a chrysanthemum-style bloom below them, arranged in a cluster that wraps across the forearm. The design uses fine, clean outlines with light shading inside the petals and centres. It is shown in black ink and grey tones against bare skin, with a white top and denim jeans in the background.

The Bramleys have to come down before the wasps get drunk on them, Nell says, so you are up the ladder at seven with the bag strap cutting into your shoulder and the grass still silver under the trees. Below, the headland is a mess of red poppies that came up the year the spray was stopped, papery and loose, and she will not let the tractor near them.

By ten the dew has gone and the petals have started to drop, one per flower, sometimes two when the wind gets up. Nell carries her sketchbook in the apron pocket with a pencil stub behind one ear. She stands at the end of the row and draws in short, quick strokes, the way she was taught at the art college in Hereford before she came home to the farm and never left. "Be quick," she says. "They don't wait for anyone."
You try, and your poppy comes out looking like a bowl or a wound. She laughs, turns the page and draws the chrysanthemum from the pots by the gate instead, every ray a single fine line with the shadow pooled where the petals curl under. "Bloom holds still," she says. "Poppy doesn't. So you learn the shape of the thing that's leaving."
By the afternoon the poppies are bare green heads on stalks and the fruit is stacked in crates up to the shed roof. Nell tears out the drawings and pins them to the door beside the cider price list, where the damp will get them first. "Next year you can do the apples," she says. "They hang around long enough."
