Peony tattoo on the side of the torso

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two large peony flowers, one deep red on the left and one peach-orange on the right, with a third bloom partly visible behind them. Dark green leaves and stems surround the flowers, and the petals are shaded with smooth gradients and defined outlines. The colour is bold and the design fills the frame against bare skin.

Don't turn the lamp up, Mr Okafor, the moths will only come back. Now. You asked about the red ones. My grandmother grew peonies behind the laundry in Leeds, which nobody believes, but the soil there was black and stubborn, and she fed it eggshells and tea leaves from the works canteen until the stems came up thick as a child's wrist.

Every June she cut one red bloom and one peach, wrapped them in damp newspaper, and sent me on the 47 bus to the ward where my mother was. The nurses thought the flowers were for her. They were really for the leaves, which my grandmother said kept the dark off a sickroom. Dark green, she called them, the colour of a bottle held up to a window.

The night my mother died, the red one had already gone over, but the peach was still tight, closed like a fist. I sat with it on the locker until the sky turned the colour of its underside, and then I watched it open, one petal at a time, while the day staff came in with their bags and their noise. Nobody had told me peonies take their time. Nobody had needed to.

Pass me that cup, and mind the tea doesn't go cold on the sill. Drink it while it's warm. That bloom on the windowsill is from the florist's cart, not Leeds, but it's the same shade of peach, and I've been watching it since two o'clock.
