Realistic colour tattoo of four peonies with green leaves running down a person's bare back, placed along the spine.

Colour peonies running down the back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

Four large peonies in red, pink and orange stack vertically down the spine, each with green leaves at its base. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine detail, giving them a lifelike, dimensional look. The flowers fill the centre and upper back against a dark background, with the skin tone of the back providing a clean contrast.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had got into the big top again by the third week of November, and Harold was still arguing with the council about the lions. I sat on an upturned crate in the wardrobe wagon with a mouthful of pins, listening to him through the canvas, and I didn't look up when he came in because I already knew what he'd say.

"Ada, they want the coat back." The coat was the old ringmaster's frock, dark as a wet rook, and down its back my mother had worked four peonies in silk the year Harold's father bought the show. The red one sat highest, near the collar, its petals heavy with stitching. Then came the rose pink, then the orange like a banked coal, and last of all a blush bloom at the hem with leaves climbing its stem like a green hand. She used to say the flowers were for the people who had to stand under the lights and be looked at, so they ought to be the brightest things in the tent.

We played Doncaster to eleven people and a dog. That night I sat with the coat across my knees under the one bulb and unpicked the orange peony to mend its shadow, because the thread had gone grey. Harold came in with two cups of tea and watched me work. "Leave it," he said. "Nobody sees the back."

"I see it," I said, and I bit off the thread and set the last leaf in its place, so the four blooms ran down the lining like the seasons going the wrong way, and I folded the coat for the lorry in the morning.
