Peonies with leaves on the side

Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large cluster of peonies, with one deep red bloom on the left and two peach-orange blooms on the right, is surrounded by dark green leaves. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine highlights, giving them a realistic, dimensional look. The flowers fill the frame across the skin, with the navel visible just above the design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third hour past the last servo, the peonies in the back of the van had started to droop at the necks, and Maureen Hale pulled over under a tamarisk to pack the crates with ice from the cool box. The order was for a wedding in Carrow Flats, two hundred stems, the deep red ones for the table centres and the apricot doubles for the arch. Her father had grown them in a glasshouse behind the house, and he had told her that peonies forget they are supposed to bloom if you rush them.

She drove on with the windows down because the air-conditioning had died somewhere near the salt pan. Heat came off the tarmac in sheets. A lorry passed her going the other way, its driver lifting two fingers from the wheel, and the dust it kicked up hung over the road long after it had gone. She kept her eyes on the white line and thought about the bride, whom she had never met, and the father of the bride, who had phoned four times to ask whether the reds would be dark enough in the evening light.

At the crossroads the sun was low enough to turn the flat land copper. She stopped again, not for ice this time, and lifted one crate onto the tailgate. The largest bloom had opened fully overnight, its petals curled like the edges of a torn letter, and the pale yellow heart of it had gone rust at the rim. Maureen touched one petal with a fingertip. It was cool, and it was going.

She had nearly three hours left and no reason to hurry now. She took the long way round through the dry riverbed, where the stones were warm and the water had been gone for years, and let the flowers have the last of the shade.
