Peony tattoo on the upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large peony bloom with layered petals is drawn in bold black outline across the upper arm, with leaves trailing down towards the elbow. The petals and centre are filled with stippled dotwork shading in grey, giving soft gradations of tone. The image is shot close up in natural light, with the bloom filling most of the frame against a white wall and a green patterned top.

Mrs Ada Penhallow kept the boarding house at the top of Fennick Steps, and the one thing in her back garden she would not let the gulls near was a peony her husband had carried home from a Truro nursery the spring before he went to sea. It was a stubborn, heavy-headed plant. Each June its green sheath split and the bloom fell open in layers, pale as candle wax, and each June the lodgers complained about the ants.

The winter the herring failed, a boy called Tobias Quick came up from the harbour with a handcart and no money, asking for work. Ada gave him the box room over the scullery and a job scraping the flagstones. He saw the peony was rotting from the root, its leaves freckled with grey, and said nothing for a week. Then he went down to the rockpools and came back with a bucket of wet sand and crushed mussel shells. Each night he dug them in and dusted the petals with a fine stipple of chalk so the damp could not settle.
By midsummer the bloom had recovered, though it never opened quite so wide again. Its centre stayed tight and dark as a knot in old wood. When Ada asked why he had bothered, Tobias said a thing carried a long way ought to be kept alive, and went back to his flagstones without looking up.
The following spring her husband's ship still had not come home, but the peony did what it always did, splitting its sheath on the first warm morning. Ada cut the finest bloom, set it in a jug, and carried it up to the box room. The door was open. Tobias was asleep under the window with his boots still on, and she left the flower on the sill where the light would fall on it first.
