Philippians 4:13 script with heart on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reads Philippians 4:13, with the reference set in a slanted, flowing hand and the numbers written smaller beside it. A small solid black heart sits after the lettering. The ink is crisp and dark against the skin, and the arm is shown held up against a plain, slightly cluttered background.

Dear Jem,

The big top came down on Tuesday, and it took three of us and the old tractor to fold the canvas before the wind got under it. Pa would have sworn at the weather and then at the tractor. Instead Mrs Okafor's boy stood on the centre pole and read out the words painted along the side of the wagon, the ones Pa always said were the only honest advertisement we ever had: I can do all things. He got as far as the fourth word before he lost his nerve, and the canvas slid off him like a sail.
Mr Lusk from the bank came up from Boston with his clipboard on Wednesday. The wagon is going to a scrapyard outside Spalding and the horses to a farm near Sleaford. Nobody cried, which I thought was odd until I realised we had all been crying since the spring and had simply run out of it.
I took the offcut from the wagon board before the saw got to it. It's the corner with Pa's slanted hand on it, the book and verse, and the little black heart he painted after Mam died because he said the letters needed something to stop them running off the edge. I've got it wrapped in my coat. I'm going to the coast to see whether the pier fair at Skegness still has its lights on and wants someone who can mend a rigging and keep a straight face.
Write back to the Spalding address if you can. I'll be the one with the board under my arm, pretending I can do all things, and mostly managing.
Your sister, Dora
