Faith hope love script on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a clenched hand resting on a pale sheet, with a black tattoo of the words faith, hope and love in flowing cursive script across the inner wrist. The linework is fairly fine and even, with the letters joined and loops extended at the start of faith and the end of love. The ink is black and grey on skin with a neutral tone, and the purple fabric and white bedding in the background sit around the subject.

Nobody on Ward Seven asked Margaret Hale what the words on her wrist meant, because she turned her arm over whenever a bell went and the porters had learned to read them upside down before they could read the clock. Faith, hope, love, looped together in a hand that had been practised on hymn sheets. She said it was her mother's writing. She said it the same way every time, which was how the night staff knew to stop asking.

The bad night came in February, when the boiler failed and the corridor lights dimmed to amber. A boy of nine lay in bay four with a fever that would not break, and his father had gone home to sleep because he had a shift at six. Margaret sat on the edge of the bed with a flannel and a cup of water gone warm. She did not pray aloud. She counted the drips instead, one, two, three, and hummed the tune her mother used to hum over washing lines.

By four the fever broke the way weather does, all at once and without apology. The boy asked for toast. Margaret went down to the kitchen in her slippers and found the grey loaf they kept for the night staff, and as she buttered it she saw the ink catch the strip light and understood that the three words had never been a promise about the boy at all. They were a list of what she had to carry up the stairs with her, and she had remembered to bring all three.
