Script quote along a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A long line of black cursive script runs diagonally up the forearm, with tall looping ascenders and descenders across the words. The lettering is solid black ink with no shading, set against pale skin and a dark, softly blurred background. The text fills most of the frame, and the photo is taken straight on at close range.

Dear Maggie, we are nine days out of Falmouth and the sea has not once been kind. The cook swears the weevils in the biscuit are the only passengers who enjoy the voyage. I have the watch from four until eight, which leaves me the lamp, the dark and nothing to do but think of you on the quay with your shawl pulled tight against the wind off the harbour wall.

Your father will have told you I am a fool to sign on for two years on a tramp steamer, and perhaps I am. But I watched the mate count our wages on the chart table, pencil between his teeth, as though money were something that could be made to sit still. I want to stand at your father's door one day with my cap in my hand and nothing in my pockets but a good name.
Last night young Jory from Penzance asked what I had written to the girl who waits. I told him the same thing I always write, because I am not clever enough to find better words. You sent me Mr Poe in your last letter, the lines about a love that outlasted everything, and I have copied them out so often the paper has gone soft at the folds. Jory said it sounded like a hymn sung by a man who had lost his place in the book. He was not wrong, but I did not tell him that is how I like it.
When we make port I will read it to you on the quay where your father can hear every word: we loved with a love that was more than love. Keep the lamp lit in the window. I will steer by it.
