Phoenix rising through stylised flames
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
A phoenix with outstretched wings rises above a stack of stylised flames, drawn as a bold black silhouette. The design uses flat solid black fills with sharp, tapering shapes for the feathers and flames. It is shown in black on a plain white background, with no skin or body part visible.

At ten to three the kiln at Harrow Lane still ticks as it cools, and you are the only one awake to hear it. Gerald left the logbook open on the bench with his pencil lying across the page, the way he always did when he meant to come back to it. You pull on the leather gloves that smell of someone else's sweat and lift the spy-hole cover with the long iron hook.

Inside, the last batch of sheet glass has gone from orange to the dull bruise of cherry. Most of what you poured this week has cracked in the annealer, one pane after another, each with a fault line running out from the centre like a feather splitting. Mrs Okafor's order for the church window is due on Monday. You have hours of cooling left and no good reason to believe the seventh panel will hold.
The draught comes up through the floor grate and the flames in the firebox lean all at once towards the open hatch, as if something under the building had breathed in. You watch a tongue of blue-white fire climb the back wall, fold over itself, and hang there in the shape of a bird with its wings thrown wide. It burns for the length of a held breath. Then it's gone, and the panel on the rack has a clean edge and no crack, the colour of a struck match.
You write it in the logbook under Gerald's pencil: panel seven, held. Then, because nobody reads the book until morning, you add: it came up out of the fire. Dawn comes in grey over the yard, and you are still standing there when the first van pulls in.
